Become a "partner" with a farm that raises organic meat as part of the Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) project
The CSA approach adapted to meat
Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is about citizens linking with local organic farms to receive their provisions. The approach, better known for the weekly delivery of organic vegetable baskets, lends itself equally well to the raising of organic animals for meat. This approach is taken 12 animal farms within the CSA network, which has 77 farms in total in 2005. All 77 farms deliver directly to consumers.
Your "family farmer?" !
These days, knowing the farmer that raises our meat is a privilege. The farmer who raises the animals we eat, and nourishes and takes care of them throughout their entire lives, is truly our "family farmer"! The support that you give your farmer determines the viability of their farm.
A mutual engagement
When you sign up with one of the animal breeders of the CSA network, you commit to purchasing a minimum of 200$ worth of meat over a 6 month period. There can be some variations to this based on the farmer; they could require an amount greater than 200$ or a period that is greater than six months. Upon registration, you are required to pay half of the committed amount. This allows the farmer to benefit from your support during the period in which they nourish, care for, transport and butcher the animals and deliver cuts of meat to you.
By becoming a partner, the organic meat farmer is in the position to offer you the first choices of their cuts ahead of other market channels.
How does the partner-farmer relationship work?
When the partner registers, he signs an agreement with the producer to formalize their mutual commitment. The partner must pay half of the amount, so a minimum of 100$, upon registration. Depending on how each farm operates, the partner orders cuts or meat baskets during the six month period, based on the frequency of delivery offered by the producer. Similar to a withdrawal account, when the 200$ has been drawn down or spent, the partner can sign up again for another 100$ minimum deposit with the producer for another bloc of 200$ of purchases.
Developing access to organic meat across the CSA network
Family farms belonging to the CSA network raise animals that spend time outside, that are raised with respect, treated with care and that are fed only certified organic grains, hay and cereal. In addition, the animals are not systematically fed antibiotics and therefore their meat is very healthy. It is for these reasons that Equiterre encourages the purchase of certified organic meat directly from a local producer through the CSA network.
Fees paid to the CSA network
In addition to your initial deposit, each partner of each farm pays an additional yearly fee of 15$ that goes towards the operation, awareness and development of the CSA network. It is important to note that this fee does not make you a member of Equiterre. To become a member of Equiterre you can make a yearly contribution of an amount of your choice to the organization directly.
For any
other information please directly contact the CSA farm that
you are interested in. To better understand the operations
